Abstract

Despite of the importance of remuneration systems in service quality, there have been inadequate discourses on the remuneration system for community pharmacy in Korea. The present study aimed to examine pharmacy remuneration systems in foreign countries and to draw insights for domestic implementations. We searched published articles, pharmacy related web-sites, and other web-based references regarding remuneration systems for community pharmacy. We categorized pharmacy services that are reimbursable into three types: dispensing medicines, pharmacist professional services, and generic substitution. For the advantages in terms of clinical- and cost-effectiveness, roles of pharmacists are getting more active and diverse in medication use and other areas in healthcare. In order to promote the appropriated use of pharmacy services in Korea, it is required to develop quality standards for pharmacy services, intensify working relationships between pharmacists and physicians, promote generic substitution, and implement the family pharmacy/physician system.
